Our Story
My name is Lavora Cookson and I am the founder, director, baker and decorator at Cookson’s House of cakes. Whilst working as a health worker for several years, I became unemployed in 2017, when my dear patient passed away at age 93. I’ve always been a hobby baker and this skill enabled me to provide for my family. Soon this very hobby turned into a small business from home.
My love for baking was instilled into me from a very young age by my late mom, Georgina v/d Westhuizen. Back then she was the local community baker. Her love for celebration, family and quality made her a sought after local legend, attracting people from far and near. She believed in creating sweet memories and that every occasion should be celebrated.
Today, as a self-taught cake artist with an eye for perfection and passion for baking, I followed in her footsteps, offering beautiful custom cakes to the community for the past 6 years together with a dedicated team of who is committed and ready to serve .We are fortunate to operate from the very premises where it all began, Manenberg, in the beautiful City of Cape Town.
As winner of the Realize – a- Dream competition 2022, in the Baking and Confectionary category, hosted by Ladles of Love, we positioned ourselves for future growth and success.
